YOU Absolutely Do Demand AN INTERFACE to utilise this microphone on a PC. It has a large round XLR connector. No PC is congenital with an XLR port. Information technology is incommunicable to plug this microphone into your PC. You will need something, anything, that can accept the XLR connector, and that thing needs to be able to plug into your PC. I found that using it with a Cloudlifter simplified postal service AND turned this mic's tone magical on my particular voice. You demand a good bit of gain, no matter how yous get it. I run mine through a 14 aqueduct mackie mixer with audio gates, processors. etc. That's all optional, any mixer should provide enough gain. Do not apply phantom power, will destroy mic. If you have a mixer with at least lx gain you lot'll exist direct. I've never run it through a PC, so I'thousand non sure in that end. Y'all just need some proceeds bud. A cute mic. You'll enjoy information technology.
According to the Shure website, yeah, this needs a pre-amp. Their faq section offers several options from budget friendly ones that use phantom power to the near recommended 60dB pre-amps, link:

Shure as well has their highly regarded x2u adapter to convert from xlr to usb.

No - non ever. I utilise one for HAM radio, wired directly to an Elecraft K3, no preamp, no interface - nothing. The Transciever has a setting for HI/LO impedence, that's all it took for me to make over 5000 world wide contacts. I took off all the XLR crap, put a ii condctor shielded cablevision on it with a Sub-miniture plug (it is polarity sensitive), and wired information technology directly into the mic. No hum from phantom power supplies, monitors, feedback, barking dogs, wife talking 10' behind me, etc., just make clean, crisp audio. Preamplifier is Non required, if your input device has decent mic gain.
Y'all absolutely practice need a preamp for this particular microphone. I did not know this when I bought mine and had to acquire a couple to figure out what worked well. This microphone needs around 50db proceeds from a loftier-quality preamp to become a usable sound out of information technology, only if you tin can get that sound then information technology'southward astonishing.
Here's a nice article on Recording Hacks from June 18, 2012 (and then in that location may be newer equipment out there now to consider) comparing interfaces for the Shure SM7B: Best Upkeep Audio Interfaces for SM7B - http://recordinghacks.com/2012/06/18/sm7b-audio-interface-shootout/
No information technology's non optional. These are powerful mics intended for broadcasting. If yous are going to pay $400 for the mic and then at least become a good pre-amp, mixer and a cloudlifter or fethead to drive it. Go to Shure's site and research because y'all can acquire a lot.

Yous definitely need a preamp and audio interface or an audio interface that includes at least one mic preamp. Besides the preamp you lot employ will demand quite a bit of proceeds as this mic has a fairly depression output level.
This is a good expensive XLR Mic. And so as such you may want to pair this with the Shure X2U (XLR to USB) Indicate Adapter which costs $99 at Amazon. You tin can now use this MIC with your PC.
